Guests at the Apple Tree Lane Bed & Breakfast in Waupaca, WI, often ask us our favorite spot to cross-country ski in the area.
Although we have several favorite places for our winter fun, one that we frequently recommend is at nearby Hartman Creek State Park. Approximately 10 miles from our B&B, this picturesque park has several nicely groomed trails to enjoy. The levels of difficulty range from easy to most difficult.
I personally like to start with the easy trail beginning at Hartman Lake, where the .32 mile trail brings you past Hartman Lake and through the tall pine trees bordering the water. At the end of the lake, the trail cuts through some woods and then across Rural Road to the start of the Pope Lake X-C ski trail. This segment is a 1-mile loop that is really beautiful. You will ski through the pine forests and past the Waupaca, WI, Upper Chain 'o Lakes of both Pope and Marl Lakes.
That is a great ski, however, if greater distances are your thing, you can continue to the other side of the park, just to the west of Allen Lake. The approximately 5 miles of the Oak Ridge trails, offer varying degree of difficulty and distances, you will be sure to enjoy.
Just as a side note, the park also has winter hiking, snowshoeing and snow mobile trails. If you miss biking, then try the fatbike trails (single track-easy, intermediate and difficult).
If you don't have equipment of your own, Adventure Outfitters in downtown Waupaca, would be the place we would send you to for your outdoor adventure needs. They also will often conduct guided hikes and skies, and top it off with a bonfire, so keep checking our blog and facebook pages for updates.
As long as we have the snow, we might as well go out and play in it! Come and enjoy!
